I didn’t do much damage this year on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I did however pick up an Ebook on sale at the Clickin Moms site. It’s called Shooting From The Shadows.
I’m one of those guilty moms who usually puts her camera away after the sun goes down. Since I only use natural light, I’ve shied away from situations where my light is gone.
The book is pretty cool. It gives me many perspectives on the technical details I already know about shooting in low light. And it’s filled with beautiful imagery and examples of the settings for each shot.
I thought I’d try out some of the exercises on my only subject that wasn’t in bed yet.
These were all taken on a tripod with about a 6-10 second exposure and an ISO of about 640.
In this shot I wanted everything that was still in my shot to be perfectly in focus. So I told Grizz to make some movements. He was working on setting up our media center (bye-bye Directv!) so the only light was from the TV. It still makes me laugh.

In this one I wanted to make his arms disappear. So he flapped them like a bird up and down. LOL I love that he barely took his eyes off the TV the whole time he was trying to fly.

In this one I wanted to try to make his fingers disappear. So I had him sit perfectly still and told him to just move his fingers like he was typing. It didn’t work quite as well to make them disappear, but I like how they look like they’re flying over the keyboard (You like how I brought in a bottle to show you how sharp everything is with just the light from the TV?)

Yeah this is how we entertain ourselves after our kids go to bed. It gets pretty wild in our house.

I really want to shoot with you one of these days….photography or pool. You’re photos are amazing and truly an inspiration for me.
My photos with my Nikon D80 is good – but it doesn’t seem as sharp as my old D70 camera. Wondering if it’s time for an upgrade. My D80 did take a spill a few years ago and I’m wondering if it’s one of the issues. Any recommendations on getting a used Nikon camera at a good price and trustworthy site?
z! let’s do it! photo walk/hike or pool. i’m down for either
if you think your d80 may need servicing it may be worth it to send it in to nikon to have it checked out. we sent in our old d200 once for servicing and they fixed it up for about $200. totally worth it for us. this was a couple of years ago though…
but if your are looking for an upgrade i would recommend checking out some of the 4/3 cameras. the olympus ep-3 is super sweet! it’s the one we want! small, amazing quality and some nice lenses! here’s the link to a review http://photofocus.com/2011/11/26/photofocus-2011-camera-of-the-year/
if you want to stay with nikon, have you seen the new nikon 1? i’m dying to check those out. of course if you’re looking for a pro-sumer dslr, i have to go with my d7000
i LOVE it! we bought ours on amazon through one of their dealers. i definitely recommend going with a reputable site that has a good history and will honor your warranties or returns.
hope that helps.
