CM Blog Circle Monthly Challenge : January – Close-Up Portraiture

One of the things I really want to do with my photography this year is to shoot more deliberately and with purpose. I found way too many snapshots in my 2012 archives. Most of the time those are great to have as they preserve so many memories of my life and my growing children. However, I would like to take the time to think about composition, light and details before pulling the trigger on any shot.

I have found the classes I took last year to be a wonderful source for creative growth. Both the Project 365 and Project 52 I’ve done also helped with this journey. As a result I decided to continue with a personal photography project again this year. This time I joined a group of 15 talented women from the Clickin Moms forums in a monthly blog circle challenge. Each month we will focus on one theme and link to each other.

For January, our theme is Close-Up Portraiture. I’ve shot all month with this theme in mind whenever I had the time. Here are my favorites.

Post-Lunch Fun

We lunched downtown with Ms. Rachel the other day, Jack-Jack and I. And after our delicious meal, Rachel and I decided to practice some of our class assignments on our very cooperative model.
TownHall-4Jack-Jack adores her, so I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised at how happy and willing she was to sit, climb, pose and smile for us!
TownHall-1It’s been eye-opening to do this class again. This time around having a buddy to do it with is proving to be much more fun!

Photo-Walking With Some Talented Women

The ClickinWalk is a global event that happens once a year. Ever since I did it last year I have been looking forward this one.

And it did not disappoint. I walked with some really talented ladies and got to chat with them after over a delicious meal. Mostly though, I love looking through all the images they took that are posted in our forum. So inspirational and educational.
Love this shot of them. Yep paw-parazzi right there. Ha! I’m so funny.
This year’s walk took us from the beach at Crissy Field to the Palace of Fine Arts. Lots of beauty to be found throughout the walk. Except our Golden Gate Bridge. Nope the fog was determined to hide our pretty bridge that day. Oh well, there were still plenty of lovely sights to capture.
And so many ways to try and do it! ;)
CMers will climb (or lay down) anywhere to find a cool perspective!

By the way, Alison Crane is one of the ladies whose blog I’ve followed since last year’s walk when I met her. Her work is just gorgeous. But don’t take my word for it. See for yourself! :)

And since we’re on the topic of talented photographers on our walk. Let me just link over to our 3 Leaders of the walk too. Kristin Dokoza, Elicia Graves and Corrinne McCombs. All super inspirational photographers as well.

I had such a great time that day. I can’t believe it’s over and it will be another year before the next ClickinWalk. I’m hoping that maybe some of these women will want to do another casual photowalk before then!!

Click It Up A Notch – July Favorite

Here we go again. With all the stuff I’ve been learning in my workshop, of course I had to pick one of my shots for that class.

Some of my favorite this month was of my baby girl and her stuffed animals! Here’s the one I’m submitting to the Click It Up A Notch Contest.
Don’t forget to check out all the other great submissions there!

A Stroll Through The Vines

One evening during our stay at the winery, my boy Rex and I took a stroll down to the vineyard. I was hoping to catch some golden light before the sun set behind the hills, but I had just missed it.

Oh well, some times I just take what I can get. This little stroll with my oldest did require some begging and a little bribery. It’s just how it goes these days. He’s had 6 years of my big camera pointed in his face. I don’t blame him for being tired of it. But as always, he’s a good sport about it all once we actually get going.

Even though I didn’t get any of the pretty backlit shots I’d been hoping for, I was still happy to shoot in the evening’s diffused light. As you can see the leaves and grapes are still young and green. They are not as vibrant as the fall colors we’d shot in last time, but I love how the muted background allows my little boy to stand out from his surroundings more.

We didn’t stay too long. I have learned to capture the shots I want quick before his patience runs out. So I still have a happy little 6yo running all the way back to the main house.

And as we walk in, this little cutie is running up to greet us. Slightly annoyed that we left her, but mostly happy we’re back!

Bernal Hill At Sunset

So remember I said I was taking a photography class? Well I didn’t get last week’s assignment in… well, last week. It was supposed to be a backlit hazy shot. My boy and I went up Bernal Hill one evening after dinner one day this week in search of a shot for THIS week’s assignment (overcast skies type of shot). What did we come back with?

Some pretty backlit and hazy shots! :)

That’s always how it works isn’t it?

I did manage to try for an interesting use of the sky for one of my shots. It’s a 2nd option for this week’s assignment :)

I dunno… I may try again before the week is up! :P

Photo Session – S. Family

Remember how I said I got to photograph TWO families over the weekend? Well I’ve finally finished working on the photos from this adorable little girl’s family!

This kid has some serious cuteness on going I tell ya.

She and her little brother were incredibly easy-going and fun to work with. I’ve never met any two kids that looked, smiled and performed on cue for the camera like these two!

Their parents were just as comfortable in front of the camera as they were.

The weather had cooled down quite a bit from the previously hot day we’d just had. But they didn’t seem to notice one bit.

I’ve actually known S & P since before they even had kids. It’s been awhile since I’d seen them. It sure was nice to finally meet their beautiful children!

Yep I really need to get some pointers from mom on she gets her kids to embrace the camera like this one does. <3

Thanks S & P for a really fun session on a less than warm evening. It was was so great to catch up and do this!

Embracing The Sun

That’s the topic of this week’s assignments for my class. I learned a lot this week about light, especially backlight. And mostly in post-processing. I’d always instinctually backlit my subjects whenever shooting in full sun so it was nice to have that reinforced in the class. But the post-processing I learned really helped me with a lot of my weak spots in editing photos.

I thought I’d share my before and after for some of my assignments.

I went all out and used all 3 of my available models this week for experimenting photographing in full sun. As you can tell, I backlit my subjects in these pictures (please excuse the lack of creative composition) and tried different angles to see what the sun did to my shots. I  intentionally wanted a hazy/gray image to work on my post-processing that I learned.

I also  learned the importance of a reflector when backlighting my subjects. It definitely balances the light out and made my post-processing so much easier and minimal! I could really tell in this shot below of Rex. It also created natural catch lights in his eyes. So happy Santa brought me such a nice reflector for Christmas!

One of the assignments I worked on was shooting during the Golden Hour. The time of the day when the sun is close to the horizon and casts this gorgeous warm light on everything it touches.

I used my golden boy for this shoot. I had another Skylander character I had been saving for him and used the promise of that to get a cooperative model! It worked! :) We have had an amazing few days of warm sunshine here in SF and I capitalized on it by taking him to the beach to get these shots. I even downloaded an app that told me exactly when the Golden Hour started and ended in SF! :)

I’m not going to lie, I struggled a lot with post-processing these images. This is the point where I wish I could interact with the instructor and other students to get feedback on what I’m doing. So if you see something wonky in my colors, skin tones and edits please please offer any advice or recommendations you have! I  wanted to use a reflector for this shoot but since it was just me and Rex and the 20mph SF wind at the beach, I couldn’t prop it against my legs and body like I had originally intended to. I really needed an assistant here. I think I would not have struggled as much processing these had I used a reflector.

The things I am happy with was that I managed to created that halo effect around my subject and give his hair that warm glow. I struggled a little with the flare too though. *sigh*

It was really great to work on these assignments. I’ve learned a lot in week 2 about backlight and full sun and how to edit both styles of photos. And also, I got to spend some quality time with my boy at the freezing beach! Ha!

The kid is up 2 Skylander characters and a couple of fun excursions. He’s likely loving my photography workshop more than me! :)

Project 52 – Self Portrait

This is probably my least favorite theme so far. Not for any reason other than I’m super critical about how I look in pictures. Yes aren’t we all? I had many creative ideas though on what kind of shot I was going to try for. Some included night shots. But since I’m taking the photography class, all my focus and energy has been on learning and working on the assignments. So I pulled out a white dress (which I learned works great as a reflector on my face!) and took a few boring ones of me sitting on my new flooring. Ha! ;)

This is the one I’m submitting to the forums.

And here are the ones that didn’t make the cut.

I had joked around with my friend R when we were discussing what we were going to do for this week’s theme, that I’d just lay all over my new wood floors! So this one is for her! ;)

And since the theme is Self-Portrait, here is Jack-Jack’s. Yep she watched her mama do it a gazillion times trying to get the shot right and went right ahead and took her own self-portrait when I set the remote down. She even got up to check the shot on the viewfinder of the camera after she heard the shutter click!

This girl. I adore her to pieces.

Holiday Photo Session Exchange

A couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to do a photo session swap with a mom photographer I met on the ClickinMoms forums. I’d never done anything like this before and jumped at the chance! I was definitely a little nervous about shooting her family since I’ve only ever shot mine. Luckily she did our session first so I was able to follow her lead on the workflow of the shoot.

We decided to go back to AT&T Park for our holiday photos again this year.

One of the main things I learned from being both in front and behind the camera during a family photo shoot is that it is NOT EASY to get everyone looking at you at the same time with a smile or at least not blinking or making a weird face!

It was a little different being in front of the camera with my family after constantly being the one taking all the pictures the past 6-8 months. I’m so grateful to have some nice ones of me and my kids

And even a few of just me and Grizz in nice outfits too! Usually the only ones of us together are with my iphone’s front facing camera or taken by Rex.

Even though I have lots of shots of Grizz and the kids, I adore these she caught of them

Jack-Jack was especially difficult to get to cooperate or sit still for more than a few seconds. In the end I brought out a cookie. There were lots of shots with her mouth stuffed but at least she stood in one place for at least 7-10 seconds!

The details of our swap were pretty simple. We agreed upon a location in SF (or close) for each family and a session length of about an hour. No edits were expected, just the transfer of all RAW files to the other. However we both edited the other’s session just for fun. These shots here were taken by Celeste Wyrick but edited by me. She is a family/portrait photographer that has just recently located to the Bay Area. You can find her post on our session with her edited versions here on her blog post. It’s pretty cool to see how differently someone else edits the same set of shots. I love her versions too!

It was a really fun experience for me. I’ll post some shots from the session I did with her family in a post later this week.

Thanks so much Celeste for the beautiful shots!
